How come Russ Gordon puts an apostrophe after the "s" in Gordons' Concerts...is he a nit?
No, he's not a nit. Did it ever occur to you that he may have siblings and that they may run the business together? ...I didn't think so.
So, you say, "Looky...there they go...look at all those Gordons." And that would be plural. And if they work the business together
then they "possess" the business together. So, that little apostrophe after the "s" makes it plural possessive.
Can I purchase a season pass to the Gordons' Concert Series?
Well, sure. But, I must tell you the concerts are actually "FREE." Seriously, if you'd like to help support the series you may send us a check,
or more conveniently, you can even donate online on this web site. Take your cursor to "Sponsors" at the top of the page
and select "You May Donate" in the dropdown.
Where do you find these great acts that I've never heard of?
I've been a music fan since birth. We had no TV at the house 'til I was 7, but we had a piano in the living room.
I've been in the business for 23 years. My wife, kids and I had a "record store" for 18 years and talked music every single day. Since
closing the store, we've taken maybe 7 days off—total! Not counting Gordons' Concerts' concerts, the four of us have
seen a thousand acts from Hendrix to Nomeansno to the Who to Sublime...Telluride Brews and Blues and Telluride Bluegrass Fests.
Count Basie, Barbra Streisand, The Dead, Further Fests, Canadian Brass, many classical acts at the Hollywood Bowl. And it goes on with Pearl Bailey,
Bobby Darin, Glen Gould, Pink Floyd, Thelonius Monk, Motley Crue, George Harrison, Social Distortion, Woody Allen, Jello Biafra,
Black Sabbath, Henry Rollins, Taj Mahal, London Philharmonic, The Kinks, NOFX, Ozzie Osbourne, BB King, Ray Brown, The Beach Boys,
Buddy Guy, Yoko Ono, Chuck Berry, Dave Matthews, Los Angeles Symphony, Los Alamos Symphony, NM Symphony, David Byrne, Bob Dylan,
Willie Nelson, the Rolling Stones...let's just say, it's in our soul.
Why don't you put all the shows on at Ashley Pond—it's so pretty?
You're right. Ashley Pond is a beautiful place, but there are more parks around Los Alamos
County that are also quite beautiful and we like to show those off as well. Our involvment in the business
community is also an important aspect of the concert series. We like to show off our businesses and some of them
even pay extra money so that we might hold the concerts on their property.
How come you don't have more concerts at the ski hill?
I would suggest that you visit the
Pajarito Mountain Ski Area web site and have a look at their busy schedule.
They have several events that they themselves sponsor throughout the year for more than just skiers.
They hold
weekend festivals that include bands and a variety of other activities, such as mountain bike races, motor X racing, bike and hike
competitions, ULLRFEST, and Summerfest. Our visit to the mountain with Gordons' Concerts just adds another flavor to
what they are already doing for the community.
How come you don't invite some really popular bands like Metallica or Aerosmith?
To answer, let's look at a few of the most popular artists and their pay per show. Variety magazine noted these numbers:
Madonna—$4.6 million per concert
U2—$3.2 million
'N Sync—$2.4 million
John/Joel—$2.3 million
Of course, we could book one of the more affordable bands:
Paul McCartney—$2.2 million
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band—$1.13 million
The Who—$984,005
George Strait—$846,344
Neil Diamond—$823,202;
Cher—$789,976
Aerosmith—$754,756
Shakira—$689,520
If you get together with a few of your friends and donate a lump sum equal to, say,
several times our single-year's entire Concert Series budget just to bring in one of those groups...it could be done.
Does that help answer your question?
Oh, wait! This just in: Justin Beber will come with his band and singers and put on a show for
your birthday party for a comparatively cheap $400,000. And he has actually been booked several times by private parties to do just that.
